Melbourne: Duxton or Grand Mercure Welcom

Hi! I am off for my honeymoon and as per the itenary I am in Mebourne between December 30 to January 2. My agent has given me the availability of the above two hotels. I am very confused as to which one to stay. Any insight provided on the above two hotels will be very helpful. Thanks.

I have never stayed in either hotel so I can't give a definitive answer, but it has always been my impression that the Duxton would be the better of the two. The Duxton certainly appears to be classier, at least from the main lobby areas etc.

Location for both of them is good. The Duxton is closer to the river, Southbank, Arts complex etc. and the Welcome Hotel is preety well dead in the middle of the city. I don't think either hotels offers rooms with a view. The Welcome certainly will not, the Duxton possibly.

The Duxton is a heritage listed building and some of the rooms still have their original Edwardian features. The Welcome Hotel is adjacent to a busy department store.

The Welcome Hotel has been around for a long time as well, so unless it has been recently refurbished it may well be a bit tired. The Duxton has not been around for all that long, at least in its present form. It only seems like about 3-4 years ago to me that the Duxton took it over and gave the whole place a makeover. Mind you, it might be longer. I haven't exactly been keeping track.
