Hi, JIW!
The Marriott in Pitt St is, as the previous poster said, in a far superior location to the one up in College St; if you are eager to get a room near the harbour at Circular Quay, here are a few others to research:
Standard "American-type" hotels: Old Sydney Holiday Inn; Four Seasons (George St); Sir Stamford; Shangri-La (formerly ANA Grand); Quay West; Quay Grand; Park Hyatt.
Genuine old "Aussie" accommodation: The Russell, Lord Nelson Brewery; The Harbour Rocks Hotel; the Australian Hotel; Sydney Harbour Bed-and-Breakfast.
Rowdy Irish Pub (almost under the Bridge!): Mecantile Hotel.
There ought to be plenty of vacancies among that lot to choose from!

Hi JIW,
As Alan said if your eager to be in the harbour, Pitt st is a superior location.
But if you prefer (as we did) to be slightly out of the madding crowds College st is great, its dead opposite Hyde park and really is no more that 10-15 mins walk to harbour or the Op Hse, its really just a matter of personal choice. But both hotels offer great accommodation.
Have fun

Thanks to all for your help...I chose the Marriott on College St because of price...it was within my budget and the others either had no vacancies or were too high. But I think the location will be just fine. Thanks again. JIW
