Why just South Perth?

The Perth Zoo is located in South Perth. The kids would also enjoy Caversham Wildlife Park and Margaret River Chocolate factory (Swan Valley).

Then there's the Perth Mint, the aquarium, Hillary's Boat Harbor (shops, cafes, safe swimming beach), Fremantle (Maritime Museum, lots of waterfront cafes, tours of the prison, etc).

Perth has loads of nice beaches, Cottesloe is a particulary good for swimming.

The kids would probably also enjoy visiting Penguin Island, which is a five minute ferry ride from Rockingham. They feed the penguins 2-3 times a day, check online for ferry schedule and feeding times.

For the adults we have loads of wineries...Swan Valley, Chittering Valley, Carmel & Bickley Valleys, the Perth Hills...

Loads of nature reserves and National Parks. Yanchep Nat'l Park is a good place to entertain the kids for a few hours (hikes, koalas, park, lake).

I also highly recommend you visit Kings Park and take the ferry from Barrack Street Jetty to Fremantle - takes about an hour and you'll see a lot of Perth that way. You can continue on to Rottnest if interested.

South Perth is a suburb - you won't find any farm stays there.

<hubby wants to drive out of Perth>

I don't understand. Are you staying IN South Perth, or are you looking for suggestions on a driving itinerary along the SW coast of the state?

I have no idea what your travel style is, or what you're interested in, or how much you want to drive, so I'm just going to toss out some random ideas to help get you started with your research.

The Swan Valley is only 30 minutes from Perth.

Some farm stay accommodation options in the Swan Valley (I have no personal experience with any of these):

Kid activities in/near the Swan Valley:

After your stay in the Swan Valley you might consider traveling south towards Rockingham, maybe take the kids over to Penguin Island for a few hours. Then continue driving towards Bunbury (173 km south of Perth), either along the coast or via Pinjarra and Harvey, where the kids can visit an orange grove if that appeals:

You might spend a night in Bunbury, maybe visit the Dolphin Discovery Center:

After Bunbury you could continue your drive south towards Busselton:

Perhaps spend a night in Busselton if it appeals, then continue on to Margaret River and Augusta. Plenty to do here for a few days:

From Margaret River, you can work your way back to Perth. For a change of scenery, you might want to return via Nannup and Balingup, giving you a taste of some of the forests of the SW.

Swimming with the Dolphins at Rockingham is fantastic and only an hour out of Perth. They will pick you up in Perth.

I've not yet visited Perth but I've been gathering info.

Do u plan to travel to Margaret River? You can do a farmstay there. These are popular choices among my countrymen (families with kids).
a) Red Gate Farmstay http://www.redgatefarmstay.com.au
b) Margaret River Hideaway http://www.margaretriverfarmstay.com
c) Sunflower Farm
