Help with South Island itinerary

Fodorites:

We are thinking about going to New Zealand for the winter for probably 12-14 days. After basic research it seems the South Island is good start. We are couple with an 8 year old boy and live in southern California. With our 8 yr old son in mind could you give us an idea of what would be a good itinerary. For this trip we would like to stay at luxury accomodations so suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.

monsoon99,
What are your interests? That could help with suggestions. Are you interested in skiing? wildlife? water sports - probably a bit cold in winter for this - whale watching?
May I suggest you scan through recent postings for some great itineraries? Tim_Liz had a wonderful trip through the South Island in January, and there were several others too.
I would try to include a trip on Milford or Doubtful Sound, travel down the West Coast, perhaps the Catlins on the east coast just for a beginning.

We too are from southern california and just returned from a month in NZ.

How much fun planning activities for your son - great age.

Unless you fly to Milford or Doubtful or the Glaciers - skip them - far toooooo much driving on very narrow roads on the left side! ALL, just about is mountain driving and very hard and exhausting. Though the views are incredible, your son would tire of the hours in the car.

Start in Christchurch and head for Queenstown - most action is in Queenstown that would be great place to visit with your son.

We stayed in very nice accommodations and can recommend many, if you choose - write to me direct if you want [email protected]

We had an exceptional place in Queenstown

Mountvista Boutique Hotel

walking distance to everything and outstanding

We followed the Frommer's and Fodor's travel books and checked out all the 3star attractions. There are lots for kids of ALL ages....

You said winter....here or there?

The roads were crowded now...can't imagine how busy it is in their summer! Long lines everywhere!

New Zealand is a place we will return to. Glad you chose South Island...more to see and do of what NZ is really all about!

Just an opinion!!!!

Dotty, some of our interests are hiking, water sports especially snorkeling (no diving); biking etc. I did some archive research but did not see any posts from people going to South Island with kids.
Katherine: Thanks for your response. Yes we are going in the California winter, which I guess is their summer. Is it very warm in NZ at time of year? I will email you.

The weather in the South Island is similar to Northern California or Oregon, if that helps. Just reverse the seasons (December is early spring). It may get to freezing at night, but generally December is a nice month to visit. Rain happens, especially on the west coast, at any time of year.
