Bali & Singapore trip - anyone done it?

Am considering a 17 or 18 day package from Vancouver Canada to Bali and Singapore on Singapore airlines. Any comments or advice from anyone who's been there done that.

Jen
1) Singapore Airlines is probably the best airline in the world overall and a delight to fly on
2) Singapore is a great palce but 4-5 days is plenty
3) Bali is in Indonesia which currently is very anti-foreigners since the East Timor problems and the fact that troops are now occupying East Timor - although it is very very unlikely that you would face any physical danger in Bali it is also very very unpredictable aside from any moral issues you may have holidaying on a beach in a country that has just practised genocide on its own citizens and now has UN troops acting as peacekeepers. Bali is a beautiful place.
My mother did this trip two years ago. She said that flying on Singapore Air -- in coach! -- was an experience so good that it seemed like first class. She still raves about it. She also (surprisingly) loved Singapore itself. Clean, interesting, pretty. Found great deals on pearls there. Like the above poster, she too said that 4-5 days in Singapore was ample. While in Indonesia she travelled around quite a bit but was in Bali (Ubud and then someplace on a beach -- can't remember the name of it). She found Bali very exotic with the little offerings everywhere. Got great deals on anything wooden and carved and also on gorgeous fabrics. She also went to a smaller island that was famous for its snorkeling; can't remember the name of it but it was the highlight of the trip. She said the food was very good for the most part and she didn't get sick anywhere despite eating in off-the-beaten-path places. Found the people very kind. Agree that now may not be the best time to go to Indonesia, however.

We did this trip for our honeymoon in May '98 when Indonesia was in turmoil. Bali will be fine. First, it is Hindu and quite unique among the islands that make up Indo. Too, they are so dependent on tourism that they are extremely courteous. If you do go, let me know and i can pass on some tidbits from our two weeks. I dont know what you like to do but it is important not to fall into the real "touristy Bali" experience. Make your own agenda, let me know if I can help. We also went ot Lombok which would probably be fine alsong the West coast but you may be wise to avoid.

I also concur about Singapore AIrlines. We were in coach and it was fine. In fact, this year we went Business on Qantas and apart from the seats being obviously better and more attention paid-Singapore much better. As for the Singapore itself it depends on your taste. We found 36hours to be plenty-it is basically an Asian New York.
I was in both Singapore and Bali in 1986. I stayed five days in Singapore and was scrounging to come up with things to do after day 3 or 4. Even toured Changi Prison, which was very interesting by the way.

I stayed 9 days in Bali, and it wasn't enough time. It's wonderful. But I think I would be hesitant to go there now with all the political turmoil. My favorite place was Ubud. We stayed in huts that were really nice and comfortable. Here is the best advice anyone can give you about Bali, however. If you get Bali Belly (which you undoubtedly will) get the local over-the-counter stuff to take. All the american prescriptions in the world don't seem to help as much as what they use locally.
