Anyone ever been to Mungo National Park?

I've long had a desire to see Mungo N.P. but have never known anyone who has actually been there.
Are there many walks? How many days would you recommend staying there? What are the camping facilities like (hot showers would be nice and flushing loos a bonus)?
Would you consider it to be a 'dedicated destination' or something you'd pop into see along the way to somewhere else?
I'd appreciate any feedbank thanks.

Stormbird -

I can't help as I'd never heard of the place until just now, but I did find a helpful web site that address many of your questions:

Hi - never been there either. Friends had it on their list as a must see on a wander between Sydney and Adelaide. They camp - and are both retirees. Visit aborted due to heat. It has to be, I think, somewhere you include on a journey - it's along way from anywhere!!
The best place for info is the URL you already have.

If you do get there sometime, let us know how it was.

Another person who has never been there! However on my last couple of trips to Mildura I had intended to go and see it and for various reasons never quite made it. My impression is that a one day trip into the park is sufficient to see most of the sites. Mind you, it has been several years since I was last up that way and may be they have developed the park more since then. I have certainly always thought of it as being a stop on the way to somewhere else rather than a destination in itself.

My son who has finished his Environmental studies degree spend quite a bit of time in the Lake Mungo area but that was more for the archeological reasons that anything else. He was facinated with the area as it has produced Australia's oldest human remains dating back 60,000 years ( although that is under scrutiny due to the type of DNA and carbon dating and it cannot be redone as the skull has been reburried and therefore could have been contaminated too much to redo the testing but exhumation is out of the question I think) but anyway what is 20,000 Years between friends?.
If you are interested in anthropology and or archeology then Lake Mungo is one of the best places to start as there also has been found some rather interesting animal fossils there including the Tasmanian Tiger. I guess you could call it the Rift Valley of Australia although we are not talking quite in terms of Neanderthal or Homo Erectus stuff.

Spent a half day at Mungo in winter a few years ago.Best thing about it...the road to the Pooncarie pub.

Perhaps worth a day on an outback nsw trip.Strongly advise trying to link up with a ranger tour...if they have one.Makes a difference if you perceive the "walls of china" as a sandhill or an archeological treasue trove.

I found mutawintji national park more interesting.

Thanks all for your responses.

LizF - I became interested in a visit when I read that our oldest human remains were discovered here. Though I am by no means an anthropologist - just someone who finds the subject very interesting.

My question has largely been answered though and I think it would be best to assume that it would be a place to visit (for just a night or two) on the way to a further destination.

Thanks everyone - Happy Trails!!
