any "Outback" within driving distance of Sydney/Melbourne?

I'm helping a friend trying to arrange a photo shoot... does anyone know of any barren-looking, arid, Outback-type locations within a few hours drive of either Sydney or Melbourne? (maybe 3-4 hours drive?)

I've heard about Broken Hill and Silverton, and both are a few hours flying time from both Syd/Mel -- may use this as backup if we can't find anything within driving distance...

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
The closest you'll come to it would be the Little Desert near Horsham, about 400km west of Melbourne.
There are some areas a little closer to Melbourne but a little hard to find or to get to unless you are with a lokal.

Cheers, Mike

The way the drought is taking hold of most of Australia at present it won't be long before you won't have to leave the cities to see barren-looking, arid, outback locations!!
