1-3 day car excursions outside of Sydney; Manly Beach hotels
Hi, all,
I'll be spending 2 weeks in Australia in mid-to-late April. I will be spending a solid week in Sydney, but am interested in spending the other 7 days in areas outside of downtown. Can you provide suggestions on trips outside of Sydney (be they single 1-3 nights trips or an itinerary that might run 5-7 days before returning to Sydney).
Any hotel or restuarant recommendations to go along with the itinerary would be greatly appreciated as well.
Also, I might stay a night or two out at Manly Beach. Would welcome your lodging and dining suggestions there. Any specific feedback on the Manly Pacific hotel is especially welcome.
Thanks.
John H.

an itinerary that includes several typical day trips ex sydney might include...
blue mountains 2 nights
cowra 1 night
canberra 1 night
south coast (jervis bay) 2 nights.
The pacific at manly is fine..get an ocean view room.personally i prefer the look of the radisson.
the kiosk restaurant at shelly beach is in a great location.
the newish wharf pub on the harbour side is great for a beer and for old times sake you should have a drink at the steyne.
Do the spit to manly walk.
the local rag at manly mentioned on the weekend that the new york times had done a very favourable piece on Manly last weekend.

Good suggestions. If you don't mind driving, you could do a loop covering Canberra and the South Coast. I may be biased, but depending on your interests I think Canberra could be worth 2 nights.
The NYT article about Manly made me want to go back there. It's at

Canberra and the southern highlands/south coast is one option.
Another - if you like landscape and don't mind driving - and the idea of just pitching up appeals (though you could pre-book too) - and a variety of accommodation also appeals, I would:
do a loop sydney - blue mts - jenolan caves perhaps - then one or other of the historic towns of eastern NSW - Hill End, Gulgong, etc - and cut across round the Wollembi NP to the Hunter Valley for some wine tasting. Up to Port Stephens if you fancy seeing some dolphins, and back.
The exact route once you get over the mountains is one to plan with a map.
There aren't too many roads to choose from - but if you like an adventure ..
