We don't have a favorite, but ended up booking a driver through our hotel (Shangri-La), which worked out very well (we took a day trip to visit the Terracotta Warriors and another to see several ancient Spirit Road sites outside the city -- highly recommended!).
Inside the city we took taxis, which was very easy.

Sorry, I used the buses, both in town and to get to the warriors. Plus an occasional very cheap taxi.

I guess janisj's comment about the "HUGE fights" here on the Asia Forum that have been going on "for ages" have driven me back to look for myself.

I'm severely disappointed. All I'm finding are these tame threads asking normal travel questions.

Where are the "HUGE fights"?

BTW, Bob, there are a couple of really good tour companies in Xian in one of those hotels - let me try and find the names and the addresses.

You'll be much better off taking one of the small tour groups. Not CITS.

Actually, Approach_Guides' recommendation is quite good.

The Shangri-La Hotels is my favorite chain in Asia. Anything they arrange, private or group, would be good.

Have you decided on a hotel in Xian yet?
