Would appreciate your comments on my Vietnam itinerary
My husband, two adult daughters and myself will be in Vietnam May 21-June13.
Flying to BKK on the 20th. First we had planned to stay in BKK for three nights. Been there many times before but with the present troubles we decided to stay in Novotel Hotel at the airport on the 21st and fly to Saigon on 22nd. We will get to BKK very late at night.
May 22-Saigon,
May 23-25 (three nights) Mango Cruise to see the Mekong Delta.
May 26- Fly to Hanoi- this is the same day that our Cruise ends. Is it possible to fly to Hanoi on the same day?
May 27- Hanoi
May 28- Emaraude Cruise for Halong Bay
May 29- 3 hours drive from Halong city back to hanoi to catch the train for Sapa. Would this be too much to do this right after the Cruise?
May 30-June 1st- Sapa
June 2nd- Train
June 3-5 (three nights) Hanoi
June 6 and 7 Hue. Fly from Hanoi to Hue
Hire a driver to go to Hoi An.
3 nights in Hoi An
Fly to Saigon. One night In Saigon. Last night in BKK Airport Hotel.
Fly home.
One of our daughters will be with us from May 26th to June 3rd. That is why the first part of this trip is a little rushed.
I would love to know what you think about this.
Thank you very much.

It really depends on what your interests are bit I would not bother with a delta cruise even for two nights. We just got a boat into the delta and did a homestay for one night. It was very enjoyable but that was enough ( homestay was the best part). A longer trip will allow you to see more of the delta but it is just more of the same.
As to whether you have enough time to fly to. Hanoi agpfter your cruise, this obviously depends on your cruise arrival and flight departure times which you don't provide. It doesn't take very long to get to Saigon airport and there are plenty of flights each days so I doubt you will have a problem.
Again, I assume you will start your reurn from HB to Hanoi sometime in the morning and will probably arrive back in Hanoi around midday / early afternoon. As I recall, all the trains to Sapa depart around 22.00 so you will have plenty of time, the question is what to do with your bags if you don't have a hotel as you probably won't want to carry them around all day.
3 nights in Hoi an would be one too many for me and I would add an extra day ( at least ) to Hanoi and probably an overnight side trip to the Mai Chau valley http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blo...ai/3/tpod.html

Agree Thai Mai Chau would be a great addition if you van fit it in. I liked HoiAn. It's a touch touristy, but a cute little town that is fun to explore and has great food.
We returned from HB late afternoon which would have allowed plenty of time for the train to Sapa.

It is most ideal to visit sapa arriving on Sunday evening or departing Sunday so you can go to the bac ha market on the first or final day and then have your driver drop you at the train station (if at the end) or to sapa if it is the beginning of your trip there. I am not sure from your itinerary if you are leaving Monday or just after midnight Sunday, which would be Monday morning.
I am sure that your hotel in which you intend to stay once in Hanoi, would be willing to store luggage while you site see during the day once you return from halong bay. The alternative would be to spend a day in Hanoi, go to sapa, returning and spending several more days there before visiting halong bay. From halong bay, you can have your driver take you directly to the airport for Hie. Be sure to spend a day and 1/2 in hue which is extremely interesting. We enjoyed hoi an, but if need be, you could shave 1/2-1 day there to allow more time in hue or Hanoi.

Hi adeleh,
We traveled in Vietnam a few times. Everything is well organised and you could probably manage this itinerary. Since you do 3 nights in the Mekong Delta you will surely be back in the morning of the 4th day (if I understand you right) and the flight will be possible the same day. We actually did a one-night Mekong-Delta Tour, which we enjoyed tremendously (please see our travel notes about it: http://konniandmatt.blogspot.com/200...-mar-2009.html)
To catch the train to Sapa after the Halong-Bay Tour might be possible as well, may be better to make sure with the tour operator about the return time. It all depends on your taste and time. I’m a rather slow traveler, eg I skipped Halong Bay, whilst Matt, my husband and travel companion, did it: Please find his impression here: http://konniandmatt.blogspot.com/201...012-hanoi.html
I often think, less is more, but as I said, it depends on many things.
Please, feel free to contact me directly for special questions via our blog.
Cheers and happy travels,
