Why are these hotels cheaper (Bangkok)?
Why are the Bassotel Inn, Menam Riverside Hotel and Montien Riverside so much less expensive then others along the river i.e. Marriott, Sheridan? Are they older with fewer amenities? Is it difficult to reach major sites from them? The smaller prices sure are enticing. Thanks any information.

As others have said, they are not of the same standard, it's like comparing economy/coach with business class, they offer different standards and facilities. Those you mention are perfectly ok but the others offer more luxury and comfort etc

Probably overkill, but the reason they are different is comparable to dining along a roadside, where fast-food drive-ins can be found next to fine dining establishments.
The riverside area in Bangkok is the same principle. The Montien and Menam share the same river with the Oriental and Shangri-la. If you are used to upscale, luxurious, 5* hotels and don't mind their rates, then you should definitely choose one of more expensive ones to enjoy your stay. The rates speak for themslves in this case and a hotel is not a hotel is not a hotel.
