Two thumbs up, Carol. Very well said. I totally undertand what you're talking about. It's great being greeted by Thais as I too walk the small sois and go to small places to shop. It's a real neighborhood type of feel. Happy Travels!

Polluted, noisy and all, the Chao Phraya river is magical.
No matter your age, the river is quintessential Bangkok. For me an opportunity to stay on the river should not be missed.

IMO Bangkok is not about where you stay. But I would always rather stay along the river (either side). The first time I stayed at the Amari
Atrium, not on the river, and loved the city. The second time I stayed at the Shangri-La and LOVED the city even more. You never know what you will see along the river -- one night we were treated to fireworks.
Waking up to that view out the window or off the balcony is great too. The Shangri-La also has the virtue of being handy to the Skytrain in addition to being on the river. On my shortlist would be the Sheraton, Oriental, Shangri-La, Peninsula, and the Marriott on the river.

Sorry if I insulted anyone with my river-generalization!
Carol- I can imagine the beauty of seeing the traffic in the river..I"m sure its a nice area. I'll probably go there in about ten years or so to get away from the action in Siam/Silom.
And yes, I have been to V9 two or three times. It is really nice. Boy, I love being in Bangkok, drinking and eating and all the beautiful scenery. Its intoxxxicating! Btw, is the jetlag behind you Carol?
Regards

Mango,
Yes, the jetlag is gone. It took about a week though. The older I get, the longer it takes to get back to my normal sleep patterns here at home! I refuse to take something for it. No melatonin or sleeping pills for me, thanks.
I think you just might like the Sukhumvit/Ploenchit/Siam area even better than the Silom area, if you would give it a try. Lots more shopping and plenty of great restaurants and night life. Plus, the skytrain runs down the middle of this street, so always just a short walk away. I never go to Silom unless it is to a specific restaurant such as V9.

Kathie- Happy you aren't!
Carol- I would be open to trying the areas you suggest, and probably will in the near future. My wife (Who's Thai) prefers the areas you can eat the best Thai food(usually street cuisine) I am starting to get excited to go back...for some reason it feels like a long time since last visit (only since October!). To tell you the truth, ever since I have eaten Thai food my neuronal taste center has rejected everything else and I am not satisfied until I eat top-notch Thai--She ruined me!!
