where to get not ludicrously expensive airfares to new zealand during christmas?

Your choices are direct on SQ or Air NZ, you might get better via KL with malaysia Airlines. See if Royal brunei still do AKL, but that would be SIN to Bandar Seri Begawan, then I 'think' that flight stops at brisbane also so a round about way. See if Garuda still have flights from Bali, that should be cheap SIN-Bali-AKL, remember though that if you are flying to say Christchurch even if the direct SQ flights more it might not be so much in the end. Others would be Cathay or Thai.
Try www.airfares.com.sg ( MISR Travel ) they have extensive fare lists and special offers and it's the place to look, you can also call them in SIN

Emirates to AKL until 26 Dec shows SGD 1050, Garuda SGD 1255, Malaysia Airlines SGD 950, Air NZ complicated, can't see fare for that time, Royal Brunei SGD 800-950 range but it does not clearly show if those are ok for Christmas.
So best to call them and see what they can do
