Where can we go for 5 days from Kuala Lumpur next April?

We just booked a flight into Kuala Lumpur for 7 days next April and would like to explore and see some of the more beautiful spots of Malaysia during our trip.

Can anyone recommend places that are within several hours drive from KL? Beaches or islands, perhaps? We've never been to the region and are coming from Cambodia, where we presently live, and not wanting to spend a week in a city.

One idea would be to spend a day and overnight in the Cameron Highlands. There are vast rolling hills of tea plantations that are quite beatiful and flower cultivation based upon the season. in terms if in-town i really think you can see the national memorial highlights in 4-5 hours with a guide or by taxi. That can be started by the petronis Tower, arriver by 8 AM and you can avoid the long waits to go up to see a lovey view of the city and then go on your monument tour. A visit to the Batu caves is somewhat interesting and tours from KL take 4 hrs.RT. there are huge grand shopping malls with a wide selection but the prices are not :fire-sale to be frank. but the sheer size of a few make going to 1 well worthwhile. All of the above can be accomlished in 3 fullv 8-9 hour days and 4 nights. Seven is 2-3 days too many, in my opinion.

Stan, they don't want to spend 7 days in KL, they want to go someplace from KL for 7 days.

If you want beach, Langkawi is a fine recommendation, but it is just an international beach resort.

Personally, I'd recommend the Georgetown area of Penang. Interesting cultural and historical sites, fabulous food, some lovely accommodations. Look at some recent trip reports.

Thank you! This is exactly what I wanted to hear and I've just booked for 4 days in Penang. Does anyone have any suggestions about the best things to do there? Places to stay? Areas to visit?

We loved the E&O. If it's within your budget stay there.

Get yourself a guidebook and read some of the trip reports on Penang. I did one a few years back (just click on my name and look under trip reports). Bob (rhkkmk) also did a more recent report.

Visit some of the historic sites - the Blue Mansion, the Khoo Konsi, walk in little India and through the areas of Chinese shophouses. Eat fabulous hawker food.
