CHU CHI TUNNELS
The tunnels are nothing more than a tourist trap. The present 'tunnels' are the 3rd rendition being constructed long after the war was over, 13 years ago the so called tunnels were 5 miles away. Believe me I was there in 1969 and the tunnels were in a different place and were nothing like the ready made attraction that you will see. If you want a dose of propaganda, or just want to shoot an AK at a dollar per round well you are welcome to it. When my older brother came to HCMC 4 years ago he was interested to see the attraction so I took him there. The present site was under construction then. I was embarrassed, it was so contrived. If you want to see the real thing go to the Loc Ninh area up Highway 13 and see the headquarters of COSVN, the Peoples Liberation Army command site, it is awesome and authentic. Read some history, get to know what you are looking at. The tunnels played a very insignificant part of the war despite what the tour guides would have you believe. The North got the country, the PLA got the Chu Chi tunnels, that's the old joke here.

I didn't think the tunnels were all that interesting and the drive seemed long. We combined the tunnels with the cai dai (sp?) temple which was interesting to see and great for photo ops. We considered the war remnants museum to be the best museum we visited in Vietnam - well worth a visit, but be sure to arrive early as they close promptly and do not allow anyone inside to remain to complete their visit.
