Unico Grande Sathorn

I am reviving an old post I made in Feb to see if I can get more feedback. I wonder if anyone has stayed at this serviced apartment since. It is fairly new and very close to a sky train station, but there haven't been many travelers' reviews about it that I can find. Five of us (1 child) are planning to take a 2 BR unit there. We're also looking at the Somerset Suwan Park View, which many Fodorites have reviewed favorably. Any insight on either would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard of the one that you're talking about, but don't know of anyone who has stayed there. However, the Somerset Suwan Park View is nice. I've had an extensive walk-through of it. It was very clean and they had a token-operated laundry room which is a real plus. There was also a pool and a room for aerobics/dance classes. And a Lousiana Cajun-style restaurant was on the premises on the premises if I remember correctly. Happy Travels!

It may be worth noting that all of the 'new' Unico properties are old buildings with new names. There are some rather nasty reviews on TripAdvisor, but those may reflect teething problems of new management.

The Somerset is rather nice. I know several people who always stay there when in Bangkok (on business). Unfortunately, Bourbon Street no longer manages the restaurant. Too much work for good ol' boy Doug.

Sommerset is very nice. Good pool and excellent gym. Location is a 10 minute walk to the BTS.

Yep, made the mistake of asking Doug how the new restaurant was doing several months back. He grumpily answered, "it's for sale"!

Me! I've actually stayed at this place! I spent a week in a studio there in April and also had a terrible time finding reviews of the place beforehand, so hopefully this will be helpful.

My overall assessment was that it was a decent place to stay, but you could probably do better. (I booked quite late and other places, like Centre Point Silom which people on here love, were already full.)

Pros:

It's very close to the Chong Nonsi Skytrain station (<5 min walk) and maybe about a 10 min walk from the Silom area (lots of shopping, etc.).

Staff were very friendly and courteous. I didn't experience any of the scary billing problems described on tripadvisor, but maybe I was just lucky.

Room was clean and reasonably well-equipped. I didn't actually attempt to cook a real meal though, just made snacks, tea, etc.

Free internet in my room (I had a laptop)

Cons:

The bathroom was clean, but a little musty. The shower could only be described as lukewarm at best and downright cold at other times.

There are token laundry machines, but they didn't get my clothes all that clean. (Detergent is magically spit into the machine during the wash cycle, so I didn't have a choice of using my own.)

The area was just okay. If you are only going to be in Bangkok a short time, I might stay on the river just for convenience to major sights. If you like shopping, I would think staying near the Siam station would be better since there are a bazillion malls there. I never made it over to Sukhumvit area but that is a popular place to stay too.

Thanks, everyone, for your posts, especially 20schwarz, for your details about Unico. I'm thinking now that perhaps I should go with Suwan Park View. It's a little more, but we'll have more room, and it sounds like a nicer place too.

I'll be staying at Suwan Park View in early July and will post my impressions of the place on this forum.

I've stayed in other serviced apartments in Bangkok as well. I always like the space they provide. I don't really "cook" but I fill up the fridge with water and perishables for quick snacks. The hot water pot is always a useful item, as is the microwave. I'll probably try the laundry facilities at Suwan this time, as I want to travel light! I need to leave room for purchases... haha

Carol: Will look forward very much to your post. Don't hesitate to email me a copy at [email protected], if that's not too much trouble. Thanks in advance.
