Depends on what you count as a highlight. I still figure there are plenty of highlights I haven't seen, and I've spent a total of 13 weeks there over three trips. If you just want to visit Beijing, Xi'an and Guilin, you could do that in 10 days.

China is larger than the U.S. and has many many worthy "highlights" to visit. You can go for 10 days and it will be a rushed tour considering you need to travel between the sites. Escorted tours are all over the board, which "highlights" do you plan to visit, when are you going and what kind of budget do you have in mind?

The US is actually a little larger than China, but everything else being said in this thread is correct.
LIke thursdaysd, I also think 3 cities may be okay for 10 days. Perhaps Beijing, Shanghai and Guilin, if you're more interested in seeing the modern China. Xi'an is more ancient historical stuff.

For 10 days it would be best to pre-arrange/book everything to maximize your time check www.ctrip.com which can book hotels/airfares at discounted prices then its just a matter of getting off your plane and catch a taxi to the hotel
