Tokyo to Okayama - Rail or Fly?

We are a group of three adults and need to travel one way from Tokyo to Okayama. From the research I have done taking the train will cost us 10,190 yen and take about 3 1/2 hours. JAL has a discount ticket (one world yokoso / visit Japan fare) for 10,000 yen from Haneda to Okayama.

Has anyone used this airfare discount? How does it work? Any opinion on this, train or fly? Please help as we need to make a decision soon.

howzit dakine?

Tokyo to Okayama is as you said just 3 1/2 on the Nozomi shinkansen. Yes,I have used the discount airfares before and they are great for long distances but in this case the train will be faster and much easier to do imho. The train would be more expensive though, so up to you. Have you checked www.hyperdia.com for train pricing and schedules yet?

Taking the plane you first have the commute from your hotel to Haneda airport and have to be there at least 1 1/2 hours before your flight to hassle with the check in and security. Then its the 1 1/4 hour flight. Then the wait to claim your bags and the 40 minute bus commute from the airport into town and your done.

The train will drop you off at Okayama station in the middle of the city and you will love the comfortable and much more scenic ride on the shinkansen. If you have a rail pass then you can't take the nozomi but you can take the hikari and it would make sense to get one if you use the train systems for long travels. See here for more details on rail passes and their use.

I am sure others will chime in with their opinions soon.

Aloha!
