Although it is 'technically' the rainy sseason you should not take this that there is rain 'everywhere'. Many areas including beach areas in fact only have a few inches of rain, whereas others have substantial rain. The East/Gulf side of Thailand is relatively dry. Try http://www.worldclimate.com

What places close to Bangkok have the least rain in August and September? Does Northwest still fly direct into Bangkok, someone says we have to change planes on the way but my agent is vague on the oint.

If you fly Thai Air, you can qualify for major discounts on hotels. Check the Thailand Fodors guidebook for more information.

Cha Am and Hua Hin have the lowest rainfall, just a few inches, Pattaya also has fairly low rainfall but would not suggest for family. A Limo from Bangkok to Cha Am / Hua Hin will cost you about US$55-60 ( so that's under $15 each. NW aircraft change at Narita(Tokyo).
