Thailand, Asia -- where to go?
My husband and I are thinking of visiting the east next year sometime. We have NO idea where to even begin, but we are definitely interested in Thailand and maybe one other country. What are some top suggestions of places to see in Thailand? What is the best time of year to go? We are thinking of a 2-3 week trip... is this a good amount of time to get a taste of the culture there? We are in our late 20's and enjoy beaches, sightseeing (temples, buildings etc.), but not so much into clubs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thailand is a good place to start exploring Asia. The Thai people are very friendly, and they consider hospitality to be a high calling. There is lots of tourist infrastructure in Thailand.

Generally, first timers opt for some time in Bangkok, a trip to the north (Chaing Mai, Chaing Rai) and a trip south to beaches (Phuket, So Samui, etc). That's not a bad plan for three weeks (I'd recommend three weeks, if you can do it). If you are more adventuresome, I'd recommend trading a trip to Angkor Wat for the time in northern Thailand. There has been a lot of talk of Angkor on this board recently, so look at some of the other posts.

If you are into culture and history and seeing the true Thailand I would avoid beach places like Phuket or Koh Samui as they are just commercial beach places, little or no culture at all, and any you see is probably arranged for tourists. A very good site to see how much on offer is www.sawadee.com.
