Hello-
The hotel I booked is offering hotel transfer in a sedan for an extra 400THB round trip. I think I would have to upgrade to a van for my family which costs 20000THB round trip. Is it better to get 2 taxis or use the hotel service?

I finally booked Somerset Lake Point - thank you everyone for all your help.

You said that the van costs 20,000THB, did you mean 2,000?

You can get a meter taxi from the airport to most places in the city for around 350 baht total. This price probably includes two toll charges, (around 25 baht and 40 baht,) a 50 baht (from airport only) surcharge and the meter fare. (Prices current as of 41 days ago!)

In Bangkok don't bargain the taxi fare - it is cheaper to use the meter! From the airport most of the drivers know they have to use the meter unless you do something stupid and say how much and then the price comes up!

Two separate taxi cabs will come to around 700 baht. Don't over tip the driver! Have small bills to pay for taxi fares. A 500 baht note may be too large for the driver to cash - or he may say he "can't" cash it hoping you will be silly enough to say "keep the change!"

Two sedans from the hotel at 400 baht is not too much more than the taxi fare charges.

In the arrivals hall at the airport ignore all of the touts selling taxi rides. The touts do provide a ride but the price will be twice the cost of the meter taxi.

Meter taxi desk has recently moved from the bottom level to just outside the arrivals hall. Taxi desk clerk will ask for your hotel name and street address, the clerk will tell the driver where to go, check to see if the meter starts at 35 baht and put your bags in the trunk. You will be handed a form with the driver's cab number on it and an address to send complaints or compliments to.

When taking your taxi ride from the airpot have the exact name and address of your hotel written down for the taxi sign-up clerk. Surcharge and fare is payable to the driver when you arrive at the hotel. The driver may ask for the toll charges when he passes the booth, this is okay, just deduct it from the final price.

Ask the taxi sign-up clerk if he has a larger taxi for your group. Sometimes a larger taxi cycles through the queue.

Good luck.

I'm so happy that you've found a serviced apartment building to suit your needs. You've made a very good choice. I've been to several buildings on Sukhumvit, soi 16. I checked out the Somerset one that you've selected. And at least you'll not be too far from the skytrain station as Asoke is not that far away. Have fun. Happy Travels!

I forgot to add that a taxi to Sukhumvit, soi 16 isn't that much. I take taxis from that area to the airport when I'm there as I stay at Sukhumvit, soi 22...Emporium. I think it was around 300 baht, if that. I have it written down in my journal which is not in front of me right now. I can look it up later. The freeway is very nearby. Happy Travels!

Thank you everyone! The hotel has a "getaway package" which includes "complimentary airport transfer" but they are charging extra 400BHT for the package. Then to upgrade to a larger van is an extra 800THB one way. So, yes 20000BHT. I think we will stick to the taxis.
Thanks!

I vote to take the taxi. On our trip to BKK we used the hotel shuttle and paid way more than what the cab cost.

Waheed, yes stick to the taxis!!!! Even tho you need two of them. I forgot where you live but here in the US 20,000thb equals about $600US, versus like $10 each for the taxis!
