Taiwan in 2 days - Need help planning trip
Hello Fodorites,
I am visiting Hsinchu,Taiwan for a brief trip and will have 2 free days for sightseeing. I would like to definitely visit Taipei and get a feel for the city. It will be great to get feedback from fellow fodorites so that I can maximize my 2 free days. My rough list of things to see in Taipai are:
1. Longshan Temple
2. National Palace Museum
3. Taipei 101
4. Yangmingshan National Park
5. The Chiang Kai Shek Memorial
6. Shihlin Night Market or Ningxia Night Market
Also, I found a half day bus tour from Taipei covering Jioufen and Northeast coast with english speaking guide. The tour covers Jioufan, Nanya Rock formations, Yin Yang sea, Bitou Cape. Has anyone taken similar bus tours? Also, are tours offered from Hsinchu as starting point (instead of Taipei).
Any suggestions or recommendations for stay, things to see and do are welcome!
Thanks.

Can't help with the tours, but you might find my Taiwan TR helpful. Since it doesn't sound like you'll be going to Tainan, start here:

Don't miss the Guandu temple in Taipei: http://www.kuantu.org.tw/
Easily reachable with public transportation.
As for things to buy check the various oolong teas and the small cakes with pineapple filling.

No such service from Hsinschu: the bus tour is the typical cheap 'seat in coach' you'd buy from the front desk of your hotel in Taipei. Since it is 4 hours, expect to be spending most of your time collecting and dropping off travelers and shopping in Jioufen, and wave at the other places listed.
From your list you can reach all except Yangmingshan (a national park) by metro. Shilin night market is too much hyped: the food court recently moved underground. Choose any night market nearby your hotel.
Guandu temple though interesting with a river view, is off the metro/bus route. Best to take a taxi from the Guandu MRT station to save yourself a lot of agony finding the way.
