Sofitel Metripole in Hanoi-- Old or New Wing?
Has anyone stayed at this hotel? There is the old original wing, and the new wing? Can you recommend which one we should ask for? Is the "character" you get in the old wing still comfortable with modern bathroom facilites? Thanks.

The new wing has standard upmarket hotel rooms with the standard furniture and facilities. It's all very good, but you could be anywhere.

The old wing furnishings are in character, but beneath the old-world charm everything is discreetly modernised and fully functional.

Peter N-H
http://members.axion.net/~pnh/China.html

Ginnie,

Ahh... the Metropole is my favorite hotel in the world -- or at least parts of the world that I've been in. I've stayed at this hotel on every trip to Hanoi--7 times. THe old wing certainly has more characters with the colonial style doors and windows. The new wing is not that bad either, although the rooms tend to be a little smaller. I would choose the old wing just to walk up the beautiful old staircase. But really, you can't go wrong with either because it is the staff that makes this one of the best hotels in the world. After my second day there I was constantly greeted by name. In subsequent trips, the entire staff seemed like family. They were always extremely obliging and never turned down a request. I still receive a Christmas card from them every year... Hope that helps.

Kathy

I personally prefer the old wing as it is more authentic. The amenities are all of the highest quality in the old wing so no need to worry there.

Only thing is that the old wing creaks and has the nostalgia whereas the new wing is functional normality

John
SuiteAsia.com
