Which of the Elegance Hotels in Hanoi?
Just wondering which "number" you suggest for location, those of you who are familiar with them. I am not familiar with the ideal parts of town as I have just begun my research.
I am hoping to be there four days in late February.

That's definitely true, but also the decor differs among the hotels. We stayed at the Diamond ( formerly the "5") and loved it. It's quite contemporary in style. I posted a review on Tripadvisor ( same screen name) and attach a link to my SEA pix -- my pix of our jr. Suite are the 3d through 12th pix.

I stayed at the Diamond in Feb. this year and loved it. But that is the only Elegance I've stayed in, so can't compare with the others. I can say I really liked the location of the Diamond. Just walk outside the door and you are in the Old Quarter.

We stayed in the Elegance 4 for most of our trip, but moved to the Elegance 3 on the last day. The rooms were larger in the Elegance 3 and I would say it was probably the nicer of the hotels with substantially larger rooms, so I don't think the numbers really mean that the hotel is better. In any event, I don't think you can go wrong with any of this chain's hotels. The staff at both were the most incredible we have ever encountered. They couldn't do more to help us. From what I've read, I believe the Elegance 5 has larger rooms and is in quite a nice location near the lake. The Elegance 3 & 4 were also in the Old Quarter, which we loved being in. The Elegance 4 was in a quaint little alley way.

I remember dgunbug reporting that in a regular double in the "4" you couldn't walk around the bed. That's not so in the Diamond. We stayed in both a jr. Suite and 1 night in an executive suite, and peeked into a regular room and they 'd all be just fine ( depending on budget - regular room was $75, jr suite was $99 and exacutive suite was $105, all plus tax. Oh, and what they call a suite is really just a larger room ( large, larger, largest).

Hi! Well, not quite sure. Trying to follow our son a bit this year. Had hoped to connect and also go to NZ but am thinking this is so much more complicated, ( adding NZ to this) and our son will only have 3 free days at end in NZ to be with us.. so might try to attach ourselves only to the Asia portion.
Places I want to go
BKK
Hanoi
Siem Reap
Luang Prabang
sapa?
and of course as much as we can fit in once I know what we are doing/how long we are going for, and which portion of his trip we join.
I will get to make a lot of the arrangements because luckily my family really really trusts the info i get, mostly from here!
I will keep you all posted as I will be looking for great places to eat and enjoy.
I see there is a lot of malaria zone in Laos, Cambodia, etc.. had not thought of that.
I haven't seen many people talking about that though here.. do people just go with no pills and risk it?

We had an outstanding experience in a larger "suite" room at the Ruby (aka Elegance 4) a couple of months ago. It was right in the heart of the old quarter, but (as dgunbug mentions), it's on a quiet little alley. The people there were awesome and couldn't do enough for us, every day of our stay.
Almost certainly the best value of any hotel I've ever stayed in. And that's a bold statement.

Mr_go - Great pictures. Didn't you love that little alley where the Elegance 4 was situated! I was so pleased with the location and felt we were in the center of the action. I agree 100% about the value of the hotel. I have never experienced such wonderful service.
