Shilin Night market in Taipei

We are in Taipei for a day on a cruise. Can we go to the Night Market? How far from cruise ship area and what time does it begin? We debark at 10:00 pm

The cruise dock for Taipei is at Keelung, which is about 45 minutes by train to Taipei. From there, you can take a taxi to the Shilin Night Market, or you can get there via its metro system. The night market really doesn't get going until dusk. Depending on what time the sun sets while you're there, you may be cutting it close if you have to be back on the ship by 9. I believe there is a night market in Keelung as well, so you may want to check that out.

Thanks. Any ideas for what to see during the day and if we need a guide?

You're welcome. It depends on your interests. The National Palace Museum has one of the best, if not the best, collection of Chinese art and artifacts in the world, and can easily be combined with the gardens of Chiang Kai Shek's former residence in Shilin for a day. If you're interested in memorials and monuments or shopping, you can venture into the city center. Or if you want to stay closer to the cruise port and are interested in some walking / hiking, then take a half-day trip to Yehliu to see the rock formations carved by centuries of wind and water erosion. We can give you other suggestions if you give us a better sense of what interests you.

I agree, Kathie. During my visit, I spent two half days there, and didn't see everything. And to think that there's so much that are stored in warehouses for lack of display space is mind boggling.

Yes, you can take a cab, but be prepared for an expensive ride.

You can take a train to central Taipei and catch a cab from there, and that would save you some money. The museum and the Chiang Kai Shek residence would take up a full day, unless you have other interests. Please let us know what you like.

Hi,

I am a local tour guide in Taiwan. Here is my suggestion.

1. You could take taxi directly to and from, and each way cost roughly US 22, and it takes 45 minutes.

2. You could take train to Taipei first and transfer MRT to Jiantan Station. The total cost per person is US 4, and it takes roughly 60 minutes if you catch on the train very soon and don't get lost in the complicated traffic system .

Normally, the night market closes at 12 am in the weekday, and 1:30 am in the weekend . It takes at least one hour to finish the whole area .

For the one day tour in Taipei, Here is my recommendation.

Morning: National Palace Museum
Lunch: Ding Tai Feng
Afternoon: 101 view deck, CKS Memorial Hall, Longsan Temple
