I am bringing this top back to the top in hopes that we can receive some further tips on eating in Shanghai....(I wrote a trip report about my own experiences, see thread linked below). I am interested principally in eating Shanghainese food but will consider restaurants featuring other cuisines of China. (Any good NW- or NE-style places?)
Is Chun still a place to consider? (In 2007 I could not get a reservation)

ekscrunchy: Try "Jade Garden" at 1121 Yan An Middle Rd (next to the Chinese run Yan An Hotel in Jin An Temple area). This branch according to their business card i have, serves Shanghai and Sichuan cusines. I went there several times and I did not see any tourists. It's a very nice full service restaurant, always crowded, frequented by middle and upper class locals. I don't know if they have English menus, and I doubt the servers or hostesses speak English. I speak the Shanghai dialect. "Jade Garden" has another branch at 127 Mao Ming South Rd near Cathay Theater in the old French Concession serving Shanghai and Cantonese cusines (according to their business card). I have not been to this one; I assume atmosphere, food qualities are about the same. Let me know if you need their phone numbers.

Our most memorable meal in Shanghai was at 1221, a recommendation from this board (Andrea, long ago). It's a bit far from the center (might have cost us $4 to get there!), but the food was exceptional. We also had excellent dim sum at Crystal Jade in Xintiandi (2nd floor, above MacDonalds).

Marija: Many thanks! I will do some research on 1221. It seems to be near Hong Qiao, at 1221 Yanan Lu, in case anyone else is headed that way.
I ate at DTF which is on the same floor as Crystal Jade, if I am remembering right, in Xintandi.
I thought it was exceptional!
On this trip, I will not be alone but will be traveling with an older couple with virtually no experience eating any kind of Asian food. But they have traveled with me before so they have some idea of the importance of choosing the right places to eat! I am trying to stick mainly to Shanghai food, but will probably try one or two places with other regional cuisine. We are headed to HK after, so no Cantonese in Shanghai for us.

Definitely give Crystal Jade a try, the dumplings were really quite good when I went! I saw it on this magazine website where people voted for the best restaurants and bars in Shanghai - http://www.urbanatomy.com/index.php/...awards-winners .
For more authentic Shanghainese I agree with ekscrunchy though, I'd probably go to Din Tai Fung. The 'Xiao Lung Bao' there is to die for.
