Restaurants in Kathmandu?

Hello fellow fodorites!

No, I'm not suddenly going to Kathmandu, but a very close friend of mine is! She'll be there the first week of October as part of a trip associated with a charitable foundation. While some meals have been planned, she will also have 3 or 4 dinners on her own.

I haven't been in Nepal for almost 11 years, so unfortunately, I don't think I have anything relevant to recommend. I've done a search here, but not come up with much.

She will be staying in a hotel near Swayambhunath Stupa if that helps.
Any current dining recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

My thoughts exactly! Either that or you really wanted to get back into a planning mode FAST!

Kristina, you had all of us thinking you were off to Nepal!

I do have some info on restaurants in Kathmandu. I'll see what I can remember...

Ghar-E-Kebeb is an Indian restaurant now located inside the Everest Hotel on the Durbar Marg. It was renowned for many years as having the best Indian food outside of Delhi.

There is a little restaurant inside the Garden of Dreams (on the edge of Thamel). We didn't eat there, but I would have liked to, for the setting alone.

1905, a restuarant located in and old house and garden on the edge of Thamel is considered to be the "hot" restaurant in Kathmandu for ex-pats and visiting dignitaries.

In Patan, inside the Patan Musem on the Durbar square is a lovely little cafe in the courtyard of the palace.

Well, 'you and me both' (not since my early 'carefree mountaineering' days), but can't help but give praise to some lovely, languid post-Himalayan climbing afternoons on the 'back lawn' of that sweet Yak and Yeti hotel. Fine afternoon 'tea', indeed. (And, will never forget an all-time cherished climbing buddy almost 'coming to blows' with another mountaineer on that sweet, green lawn. Most improper, indeed.) (And, most enjoyable.)

Now, given your KTM travelling friend is female, well, will refrain from mentioning two beloved KTM 'parlours' on this family friendly forum, but will shamelessly suggest, yes, a certain Singaporean airline, should she be flying in/ex BKK, before/after flying KTM, via TG C. (Always worked for me.)

Keep up the good work, fodorites, register at SQTalk, book those SIA tix, support the SIN and BKK economies and don't forget those fun-loving massseuses.

Hi,

so, your friend will be near the 'Monkey Temple' ...I don't know any restaurants near there but on the Tibetan side of town (bhoudanath stupa) there is a nice place called the Garden Restaurant where you can get some very nice potato curry dishes. It is in behind the bhoudanath beside the Khumbu hotel (used to be called the Happy Valley Guest House). if you need more info email me at [email protected]

Cheers!!
