Purchasing a Nozomi train ticket - Tokyo to Kyoto

Hi,

How can I purchase and reserve seats on the Nozomi train between Tokto and Kyoto? Can it be purchased online?

I know we cannot use the Japan Rail Pass on these trains, however, does this mean some additional amount has to be paid to upgrade or even with a Railpass, a whole separate ticket is required for these trains?

Thanks for your help

You can purchase the tickets at the train station in Tokyo; you can buy the ticket and get your seat reservation either from a JR ticket office or from one of the ticket vending machines (English is available). You can't reserve/purchase online using any English-language website. Unless you're traveling at a peak time such as Golden week, you'll be able to get a reservation easily, especially if you buy the ticket a day in advance.

With a JR rail pass, you can't "upgrade" to Nozomi - separate ticket needed.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. Now I wonder if it makes sense to buy the JR pass. Anyway, will start a separate topic for that.

DonTopaz, the OP should be asking if there is a discount one-way Tokyo-Kyoto ticket offer. I think you mentioned one a few months ago and I think it was different from the Shinkansen Tour or E-voucher offers. Do you know of another option to paying the regular one-way fare?

mrwunrfl, I don't know of any one-way discounts. The round-trip one that I recall was called "Flex Pass," and it allowed unreserved travel on Nozomi trains for about 21,000Y. But the link I'd used for that offer no longer works, so it may have been discontinued.

Japanican (www.japanican.com/en/tour/ ) does still offer a bunch of different rail + hotel packages that beats the pants off the price of any other means of taking a round-trip shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto.

The only discounts I know of are on the Hikari and Kodama shinkansens only and need to be purchased one week in advance.
Seek a local Japanese tour agent for best pricing or use the link Don leaves above. Its the best deal you'll get outside of Japan

Aloha!
