The last time we upgraded to business class for a trip to Bangkok (from Hartford) was February of this year. I think I purchased the tickets some time in early April 2004. When you purchase 11 months in advance there is lots of availability and prices tend to be lower. My guess is that your February flight is pretty well filled up so United can charge the higher rate.

I know this may not help you but if someone is planning a trip shortly to Asia United has a pretty good sale on business class tickets. Follow this link:

And I purchased my tickets for our November trip back in February, I think, so the comparison is between tickets bought far in advance vs. those purchased just a few month in advance.
By the way, I've had several experiences where United had a sale price and it was upgradable. For instance, I purchased Seattle to Hong Kong tickets for $699 or $799 and was able to upgrade them. That was a few years ago, so I don't know if the sale prices are still sometimes upgradeable.

Thanks HT, I'll have a look at it. Saving time is important but we can't afford a fortune in air either. If we do fly Thai's regular economy, it will still be 5 inches more legroom than we're used to and that's huge. 5 inches and a few drinks plus Ambien and I think I'll be okay.
