Phranakorn-Nornlen Hotel in Bangkok

Has anyone stayed here? It gets rave reviews on trip advisor and it has a lovely website. Actually one of the few hotels in Bangkok that has peaked my interest (OLd Bangkok Inn did also until I heard about stairs)enough to consider a try at some point.

Although I think you have to take tripadvisor reviews with a huge grain of salt, I agree that it looks intriguing. The problems with tripadvisor are many, and I'll admit that I read the reviews there, but do not depend on them for anything other than entertainment. I've often found that there are rave reviews about places I'm luke warm about, and that places I love get poor reviews. It's all relative, and highly dependent on the demographic that uses tripadvisor, which is obviously not a match with me....or many others I suspect.

We ALMOST stayed there in August, but in the end stuck with our original plan of the Peninsula and decided to try it next time in Bangkok.

It's run by the same people as trufflers.com and although they spammed this site a lot a while ago, they do offer some interesting tour options as well. I would like to believe they just didn't know about the manners of spamming...they are a group of young people who were lucky to be in a position to start their own business, and it seems that their ideas are good and they have found a niche.

I've actually found tripadvisor reviews helpful. I don't agree with all of them but then I don't agree with everything on this forum --i.e. the raves about the peninsula in Bangkok are beyond my comprehension. And i find trip advisor often has reviews on some of the non commercial hotels.

Tripadvisor reviews are helpful to a point. It is very possible, and does happen, that people affiliated with hotels post good reviews for their own and bad reveiws for competition. Also, the rating system it uses forces comparison of hotels of totally different classes of hotels....the number one hotel in Orlando is a Crowne Plaza, in Miami it's a Hampton Inn. Those are surely not the best those two cities have to offer. That's what I'm talking about when I say demographics and grain of salt.

Oh I think their rating system is absurd-- totally agree on that. But I do like the reviews and generally can get a sense if the hotel is for me. have also realized that I tend to agree with european travelers more than I do with the american ones. No idea why but I take that into consideration when I read the reviews.

i agree with kim....i read trip advisor but feel that most people who report on there seem to have an axe to grind....the british reports (reports by brits) are especially troublesome to me...

That's odd because it's the brits that I seem to agree with the most. I find the americans only want the glitz and the Brits and other europeans look for personalility. I find I often agree with them.
