I'm reallllly no expert, but in trying to see how flights worked around the same sort of trip, I saw that there was a Vietnam Airlines flight Hanoi-Phnom Penh that went through Vientiene a few times per week, rather than Saigon. It was listed as a single flight number, as a stop rather than a connection, when I looked at the flight schedule.

I'm sure it's not the best answer available, but maybe it's a start. I hated to have you topping solo for a year!
