I have been to Myanmar, although it doesn't show on my profile because it was before I joined Fodors (a lot of travel doesn't show on my profile). I had the opportunity to go during my first trip to SEA in 2002 and did not go because of the requested boycott. However, on that trip I met a Canadian nurse who did go, and virtually adopted her driver. In 2004 I met her and her driver in Yangon and spent two weeks being driven round Myanmar and staying in pensions and guesthouse type places. Obviously some of money I spent (which wasn't very much to start with) went to the government if only for gas for the car, but I kept it as low as possible. I did not take the boat from Mandalay to Bagan because it was run by the government, as were the planes. It was a wonderful trip and I am very glad I got to see Myanmar before the tour groups descended.
