Nice, affordable lodging in BKK, etc

Hello all!

Thanks for all your help on my previous post. I'm trying to look into lodging in BKK and am somewhat overwhelmed! Since we're planning some more pricey stays at the Thai Conservations Ctr and a several day snorkeling trip, we're hoping to stay a little more budget in BKK. I know it's more expensive there than other places in Thailand, but can anyone recommend any places they've stayed in BKK that are nice, clean and in a good location, but not too pricey?

Also will probably need to stay a night or two in Chang Mai and perhaps Phuket, ideas for there are also welcome!

Thanks!

phrazina,

In your other post you've said that you're willing to spend for a nice hotel and now you're asking for affordable lodging. Can you give us your budget so that we can make the appropriate recommendations?

What amount of money per night do you consider "affordable?" Not everyone has the same price for "affordable!" For backpackers and some thrift travelers $5-8 a night is their target price.

For me, being retired and on my dime, affordable for Thailand is $15 - $25 for a room that is basically clean, has A/C, HW, private toilet/shower, TV, probably a refrigerator, safety box and maid service. You can get rooms in this price range in Bangkok, cheaper in other cities.

So, what is your price range? Try this place, not far from Nana Skytrain. Close to malls, travel agencies for tours, restaurants bars, street vendors and supermarkets.

Good luck.

Thanks, SirHalberd, for the suggestion. I agree with you that about $ 15-25 seems like a good rate.

Hanuman- Since we've decided on some splurge locations, I wanted to save a little in between. For example, we're spending a decent amount for a a several day snorkel trip, so we'd prefer to be more budget-conscious the night before we leave (when we'll probably have to stay in Phuket) and in Bangkok. So I suppose we are splurging sometimes and trying to make up for it a bit in between.

You might try the Reno - or any other hotel on the same Soi. (Check Google or the map below)
they have a pool and varied rooms, pleasant front of house too.

there are several other budget hotels on that Soi too....
The location of the Soi next to BTS National Stadium makes it ideal for getting around, shoppping etc. Only thing is, it might be a bit over budget - but give them a call or email.

A good source for info on budget accomodation in BKK is;

http://www.travelfish.org/country/thailand

Other sites you might try are

www.hostelworld.com
www.hostelbookers.com

Don't be alarmed by the word hostel, most will have private rooms with or without en-suite facilities. As with may of these sites, the reviews should be taken wit a pinch of salt (e.g. discount any review that uses the word "awesome"!) with the

Patumwan House is along the same soi as the Reno; Patumwan House is at the end of the soi, next to the canal. I've stayed here several times. Very clean. Inexpensive. Reliable. I believe payment is in Baht only, no CCs.
