From following this Forum for a nuber of ears and our 3 trips to Thailand and Malaysia and Ondonesia over the past 7 years I really believe 3 full days is the minimum for Bangkok even if you do not plan to shop for more than 4-5 hours. That alone is an experience.
As for hotel websites of 5 destination (hotels)in 2006 the most reliable was sawadee.com and they only required 1 nights deposit until 2 weeks prior to arrival. I read that getting back refunds from several reservation firms including asiarooms.com can be a long and frustrating process should you have to cancel or interupt your trip. Hopefully that will NEVER happen. We used asiahotels in Malaysia mostly and once in Thailand and Bali and found them to be reliable. The difference in rates came down to $5-10/night and when you are spending all this money on the trip you should focus on a reliable firm and a firm where you do not have to put all the money up-front. It is true sawadee.com does NOT refund the 1 night deposit should you cancel or interupt your trip but with good trip insurance (TravelGuard or AccessAmerica) you will not loose in the end.
