In fact in many parts of Indonesia (notably Java) the faithful are called to prayer every morning at 0430, not just during Ramadan. They're just a bit more emphatic during the fasting month.

Marmot - They were also pretty "emphatic" in Sulawesi last week, at least in Makassar. In Torajaland, which is mainly Christian, we were disturbed only by the church bells on the Sunday morning - no pleasing some people...

crellston, the operative words in the morning call -- "prayer is better than sleep" -- are not universally agreed. Look forward to hearing all about your adventures in Toraja.
