i will do the reverse drive in november... i expect it to take 7-8 hours from what i have read.

i will be using a driver for many days so i do not have a cost, but i suspect it will not be that much

I did it the other way too. We stopped at Ranakpur and Kumbalgarth. Click on my name for my trip report and I have listed the two drivers that I used.

Jodhpur - Udaipur is 300 km (Approx)/ (6 to 7 hr drive) via Ranakpur (Jain Temples)
You can stop at Ranakpur for lunch at Maharani Bagh (good place for lunch) and to visit Jain temples

I hope you got the drivers details from "Live42day" trip report

It can be also easily arranged from the hotel you are staying Jodhpur

Starting early from Jodhpur may give you oportunity to visit both Rankapur Jain Temple as well as Kumbalgarh Fort and you may reach before evening to Udaipur . Its 6 Hours drive . Very good Road . After Pali enjoy the aravali hills

There are a couple of issues you must take into account.
a. Jodhpur to Udaipur is a good 172 miles. The road passes through moffusil towns, villages and hills. This is also one of the most picturesque roads in Rajasthan. Therefore you may take an overnight midway, Eg. Ravla Narlai / Aodhi. Remember, you will need an hour to visit the Ranakpur Temples & if you are planning to do Kumbhalgarh, which affords great views of the western country, you are consuming another hour and a half.
b. You are travelling in the busiest season, when the hotels are completely sold out in Jaisalmer, Jodhpur & Udaipur. You must have a confirmed hotel booking.
c. Some of the smaller hotels also cater to the enroute taxi drivers. Avoid these places altogether.
d. Your hotel will organize a car for you but that will work out to be quite expensive.
Happy travels!
