Actually have been to neither but I'm going to guess that if you want remote, real wilderness, Taman Negara is the way to go. Cameron Highlands is developed with resorts and hotels, has tour groups, etc, etc. Still sounds nice, but not the same.

Plus it depends where else you are travelling in the country. Cameron Highlands is the shorter trip from KL, but if you're going further north, you'll get closer to Taman Negara.

I don't think Taman Negara is "highlands" per se, though. If you're set on highlands there is also Fraser's Hill. Have not been there, either, but I hear it is less developed than Cameron Highlands.

"Genting Highlands" is not the same thing - do not waste your time there!!!
It really depends on your personal interest. Some of the highlights of Taman Negara are jungle trekking, night safari, visiting the indigenous people's homes, tubbing, rapid shooting, cave adventure and hiking, amongst others. If you're into "new" things - such as water buffalos, Taman Negara is recommended.

ALternatively, you'd find vegetable, strawberry and flower farms; resort homes, golf, etc. at Camerons. It's definitely a more developed place than Taman Negara.

Taman Negara National Park is in mountainous area and it is claimed to be the oldest rainforest in the world. This area is untouched by successive ice ages and has been covered with jungle for more than 130 million years. Well this is what the guidebook said.

I find this place more interesting than Cameron Highland. Cameron Highland is tamer and cultivated (tea planations, garden farming etc) while Taman Negara is ...just jungle. I enjoyed my jungle trekkings and 'canopy walk' while I was there. Accomodation is comfortable but not luxurious. There is only one so -so restaurant in the park. But I had some nice Malay home cooking from a small family run restaurant which was on a barge in the middle of the river.

If you like your mod com, Cameron Highland is probably a better bet.
