Hong Kong newcomer
I would like to stop in Hong Kong to break my trip from LAX to Hanoi. So..I walk out of the terminal. Then what? Recommendation for hotel (this will be Feb. just after Tet),reservations? how to get there, how to figure dollars to their currency, best way to see the most impt. sights in 24 or less hours.
Thanks.
Thanks.

first you need to decide on a hotel of which there are many....you should have an advance reservation....the salisbury YMCA is favored by many of us here....its location is great and its price is moderate...it is in kowloon....
there are more expensive and cheaper hotels too...
you have to tell us what you want to spend...??
there are many ways to get to town from the airport....the easiest and most expensive is a taxi....there are busses and other transport as well..
the HK dollar is about 7 to the usa dollar the last time i looked....check the currency converter...
looks like the first thing you need to do is to buy a good general sightseeing guidebook to HK

Thanks. I'll get a guide book immediately. I need a moderately-priced hotel. Hopefully can get how to information there. I'm an older female traveler going it alone and for some reason a little scared. Crazy. I did this all the time when I was minus 60.

HK is easy to get around.
Important sights:
1. Star Ferry - most folks take from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central/Wan Chai. From Central/Wan Chai can take the ferry to Hung Hom and back. Takes about 15 minutes. At Hung Hom can walk around Whampoa Gardens. Lots of food and shopping there.
2. The peak - most popular time which is when it's most crowded. Take the tram up to the peak just before sunset. If it's not too hazy can get great view of the city skyline. After sunset can see the city lighted up.

I am a 62 year old female. I was in Hong Kong alone in August. It is perfectly safe. I stayed at the Dorset Seaview Hotel. It is around the corner from the night market. (Temple Street) The rooms are tiny but fine for one person. They have a small restaurant in the hotel where you can get a buffet breakfast breakfast. Two blocks away is the jade market. Also close is the Metro.(Very modern and safe) Walking distance is the outdoor Ladies Market. In the arrivals terminal there are cash machines. You can get HK Dollars direct from the ATM. Go to counter 13 for ground transportation direct to your hotel($16US)
