Lumpini Night Market

Fodorites please help me ! The last time I was in Bangkok , 2002, I am sure this market wasn't there.
Will be in Thailand again for my 5th trip and definitely like the sound of this market over the Patpong one which we always left
after 15-20 minutes.
We are staying on the river so will be getting a taxi. Can you please tell me if it is close to the Dusit Thani Hotel and whether it would be nice to have dinner first at the Dusit and then go to the Lumpani market. Easy walk? Am in my 60's ,
so really want to know if best to get taxi directly to market or to Dusit.
If the former ,is there somewhere in the market , or cose by , where we can dine. Doesn't have to be fancy. A good Pad Thai would do. Am taking 3 youngsters (in their 30's) with me so want to get it right. Thanks in advance for your help. Am really enjoying this forum.

Yes, the Night Bazaar is fairly new so was prob not there in 2002. Not very close to the Dusit Thani. If u want to eat at a hotel the Conrad is fairly close but even that is a 15 min walk I think. Else there are some good restaurants on Soi Lungsuan which are not hotel - Calderazzo for Italian and Thang Long for Vietnamese (the latter is one of my favourites). U are also not far from the Grand Hyatt or the Four Seasons - 10 mins by taxi. For a very casual meal go to the Food Court at Central - a great experience IMO.

roughly the location is at the junction of rama IV and wireless or the next road over....near the four seasons and sort of across from the dusit thani...it was there in 2002 but it was new....i have still not been there but plan to on the next trip...people seem to like it and compare it to a smaller version of the weekend market...it is more organized... its near to the park...

Sorry - just reread your post. There is an open air food court in the market - it is lively and NOISY as it has s stage area where a live band is typically performing. If you have only a few days in Bkk I would not eat there. Market hours are 6:30/7 - 10:30/11. It depends a bit on traffic as on a busy day stalls may stay open later. Some restaurants in Bkk stop taking orders around 10 (eg Central Chitlom Food Court as the store closes at 10) so one option is an early dinner then couple of hours at the Night Bazaar. Alternatively reserve eg at Thang Long or The Four Seasons or The Dusit Thani if you really want to go there for 10-10:30 after confirming their hours and go to the Night Bazaar first.

i also just reread your post more clearly...
i have a dinner idea for you...it is one of the jim thompson restaurants...it is called Saladaeng cafe with a sub name of JT farmers market...it is a lovely small little restaurant on a side soi roughly placed in back of the dusit thani...11-10 sunday-thursday; 11-11 on fri and sat....actual address is: 120/1 Saladaeng soi 1, saladaeng road, silom...thats from the business card...

having said that i have always approached it by taxi or foot from the silom road area...it is on a soi off of a road that leads from silom to the left (?) when you are coming from the river...the soi that it is on empties out onto rama IV...

telephone: 02-266-9167

great mixture of foods both eastern and western and fabulous desserts...

our recent lunch there was 380 B for two of us...simple lunch, but delicious...large soup and a pasta dish, plus waters and dessert...

we have found the JT food to be very good in each of their locations...

you could then walk from there to the night market or better to take a taxi as it would make it easier for you to cross rama IV....short ride...

so i would take a taxi from your riverside location to the restaurant and have them call you a taxi for the rest of the way...make sure each place gives the taxi driver directions as to where you want to go...take a hotel card with you for your return trip to the hotel...

i just turned over their card and there is a map on the back....go up silom, turn onto saladaeng and then turn off of that on soi 1 saladaeng and the restaurant is about 1/2 way along on your left....

A big THANK YOU to "hobbes" and "rhkkmk"
for your replies. No I don't necessary want a big hotel restaurant but thought the market was near the Dusit for some reason.
Will be in BK for 9 nights so think I will try your suggestion rhkkmk of the Saladaeng Cafe but its good to know hobbes that there is a food court in the market itself.

another place which you and the young ladies would enjoy is the 3rd floor restaurant at the new conrad hotel where a daily fixed priced dim sum luncheon is available...its quite fabulous....you eat from a printed menu ordering as your stomachs will allow more food....about $11 each...a must meal on my future bangkok outings..

if you are by the river i assume you know about harmonique, soi 34, new road...very very good thai food in a unique setting---not on the river but one block in...roughly next to the general post office between the oriental and sheraton hotels...

for a special thai meal i would suggest two places:

baan khanitha, soi 23 sukhumvit road...res. necessary, either lunch or dinner...old thai house converted to a fine restaurant...next door is rasi sayan, ,maybe bkk's best shop...

the thai al fresco restaurant at the peninsula hotel on the river...name is thalyphia or something similar...a la carte or set meals for 2....our set meal was 2200 B but worth every cent ...plus you eat close to the river...

on the roof of river city shopping center on the river is a decent restaurant...great views and a bit of a breeze at nite...

You are right Piri the market is within a 10 minute walk from the Dusit Thani hotel at the other end of Lumpini Park. If you don't feel like walking then you can take the new subway from the stop outside the hotel (Silom) to the next station (Lumpini) and the market is right there. As well as having the
huge covered food court with it"s live bands there are a few nice air conditioned restaurants (Chinese, Seafood, Italian etc.) There is also the Joe Lows Puppet Theatre here which puts on an interesting show each evening, 7-8.45 and cost 600 baht.

Thank you "SCOTTERS".I feel I know exactly where the market is now and the underground info. was great. As it just opened this year I will look forward to trying it, if not for the market, certainly on some other occassion.
"RHKKMK"Thanks so much for the extra restaurant suggestions. Would you say Baan Khanitha was the best of the Thai house type eateries? We are staying at the Peninsula so will definitely try their new Thai restaurant. Wasn't there when I stayed in 2002.
Harmonique I know well. Dined there many times and always enjoy.
The Conrad Yum Cha sounds great. I do find it hard however, after a good breakfast, to manage luncheon.
It would be different if breakfast wasn't included in the hotel tarriff. Then one could just have say juice and coffee and await luncheon with glee !Having said that I will suffer and make an exception with Sunday lunch at Lord Jims.
The roof -top restaurant at River City has me puzzled,. Has it always been there? Don't know how I could have missed it. Perhaps I never made it to the top floor. Its all antiques isn't?
I spent a lot of time in River City on previous visits, having clothes, spectacles made and doing various shopping. Only stopped in one Chinese rest. on a lower floor (2nd I think), for a cool drink. Can you remember the roof -top restaurant's name as it would be so convenient after some exhausting shopping !
The girls I am taking, my daughter and 2 friends , have never been to Thailand before , so I really want them to love it as I do. For this reason I appreciate so much the time you all take on this forum , with your replies.
KHAPKHUN MAAK or as we Aussies say GOOD ON YA MATES !

the rest. at river city has been there for many years...it is really on the roof...there is a balcony overlooking the river...most is outside as i remember..

the indian rest. at the rembrandt hotel has a fabulous brunch on sundays only...res. req...we love it...you can go to lord jim any day during the week..

do the dim sum...youngsters love it...have a simple dinner afterwards and eat simply for breakfast that morning...stop stuffing your bag with things for mid morning snacks that day..;.

i just returned from bangkok and went to the suan lum (lumpini ) night bazaar 2 nites.
the prices are very very good...you still have to bargain hard , and they expect you to...
but it is clean, spacious and airy....we took taxis to get there from the shangri-la hotel
but the subway has a stop nearby. i would not eat the food in the food court...its a huge
beer garden with an enormous stage and light show with live thai rock bands...entertaining but the food looked like
it sits for long periods and didnt look appetizing to us. the beer was cold and plentiful...lots of different beer companies must sponsor the entertainment as they are
well represented.
back to shopping at the nite bazaar...many times i found things i had already purchased at other venues much cheaper at the night bazaar. great luggage buys too....we need two extra bags to get home.
patpong didnt due much for us...crowded,
stinky and hot .

aloha bob....and piri

the suan lum (lumpini ) nite market was so much nicer, easier to manuever and much more upscale but the prices were the same. we visited the weekend market
1st two days in bkk, the suanlam last two nites...so had a great time shopping. many things we hauled all over thailand were the same price as in
chiang mai.
at the nte market...we bought two beautiful buddhas/ bronze sukhotthai
style ( best i saw anywhere)for $20 each
luggage for 1/2 my best price i could get at stores across from shangri-la.
they had everything except food market
at lumpini.
highly recommend it over any other market we visited...and its cooler in the evening.
the only bad taxi ride we had was at midnight last nite in bkk from the market...first mistake on our part..
the driver said meter broke. i said we wont get in unless he uses the meter
and miraculously it worked. next, after
we were in the cab...i noticed he didnot
have his i.d. on the dash...i asked about that..no reponse, then he drove like a madman. we told him to slow down or we would get out. it was the only time we were freaked out by the taxis..and the only time we paid to the exact baht...something like 61 baht.
we survived our last nite. overall...it was the trip of a lifetime
bob...you were a huge help...made our trip just that much better
