Pebbles, Here's an excerpt from the Bangkok Post with regard to the public transport at the new airport:
"Anukalya Israsena na Ayutthaya, of Chulalongkorn University's engineering faculty, expected frustrations with public transport and flight connections.
Ageing passengers and those without their own vehicles would find using Suvarnabhumi difficult as the airport lacked easy access to public transport.
''Imagine you have jet lag and a lot of baggage. This airport requires you to drag yourself and your suitcases on a shuttle bus to the taxi and bus terminal located kilometres away,'' he told a seminar on the airport.
Mr Anukalya, an expert on the design of highways and airport systems, surveyed the airport last week and found that the large terminal, which is about three kilometres from one end to the other, could cause flight delays.
Passengers on connecting flights would have to spend time walking from one gate to another.
Criticism of basic amenities at Suvarnabhumi has mounted as the opening approaches, including a lack of signs and easy access to taxis, buses and toilets."

It looks like transportation won't be the only problem... A few days ago I booked a room at the new hotel at novotel.com for the night before my departure from Bangkok. I received my email confirmation. So everything's set, right? WRONG! Today I went back to the website to double-check my reservation, typed in my confirmation number -- my reservation doesn't exist. I read the fine print - any problem, contact the hotel directly. I email the hotel. No response. Great, huh? Well, at least I have until mid-October to sort this one out. And who knows, maybe we'll still be at the OLD airport...

Not looking forward to this new airport. I've been reading Bnagkok Post, too. And as for a lack of signs...if adequate signs can't even be put in something as easy as a mall, then I don't have high hopes for something as big as an airport. And whatever signs are there will probably be so small that binoculars will be needed to make them out. Don't laugh, but I often travel with binoculars in order to see far away signs...especially to find the restrooms that seem to always be hidden somewhere no matter where one is in Bangkok. Happy Travels!

The signage issue is OUTSIDE the airport, on the roads leading to it. On my visits, I thought the signage inside was quite good. The text on the information monitors could have been a little bigger, but they're better than the old airport.
The newspapers have reported that the airport has seen the error in their plans and will now have a taxi queue at the terminal. There will be no need to lug your bags onto a bus in order to catch a cab.

Good Lord...Did it take a rocket scientist to figure out that it would be beyond a pain to have to shuttle to a taxi stop? What were the planners of the airport thinking? Absolutely ludicrous. Happy Travels!

We will be a group of 4 people arriving at the BKK airport. What's the most economical (and convenient) way to get to our downtown hotel? Are there any limo services that charge by the trip and not by the person?

They will have a taxi service outside the arrival terminal but it would seem for only a limited number of taxis. As per report -
A stand will be established at the passenger terminal with at least 20 taxis available at all times. Officials would ensure that there are enough vehicles to serve passengers. People will still be able to take a shuttle to the public bus terminal to catch a cab. Shuttles will be available every three to five minutes.
I wonder what they will do if 100 people or more want taxis from here,

At many airports -- BOS and JFK, for example, for us East Coasters -- taxis waiting for customers must park at a remote location. If they didn't, the roads around the terminals would be clogged by the hundreds and hundreds of taxis that are often at the airport.
Only a 10-20 taxis are allowed to line up in front of a terminal. As these taxis are used, a dispatcher (airport employee) radios to the remote taxi pool to send another set of 10-20 cabs.

sssteve, all the taxi and limo services I've ever used at BKK chrge by the vehicle rather than per person. The issue is simply whether they have one vehicle that will fit all 4 of you and your luggage. Several of the limo services have Mercedes vans that are great for a family group.

None of us know for sure what the cost will be from the new airport. Bob's email from AAC limo service (the first post here) quoting 1350 baht each way is probably the best estimate. When are you going?
I usually just go to the Limo stand and get a limo on arrival. But things will be different at the new airport, so I'm awaiting the early reports from the new airport before I decide. I have some time, as my trip isn't until November.
