Langkawi

We are looking for somewhere "special" to got on holiday next year and came across The Datai in Langkawi. Has anyone stayed there who could tell me about it, also which room category you stayed in? Any info/advice on the resort would be really really appreciated. Or if anyone can recommend another hotel, but has to be 4 or 5 star. Thanks again and look forward to your replies. Cheers

The Datai is an excellent hotel - in fact we got married there a few years ago. It is set in the a valley in the rainforest with the public areas and rooms at the top of the hill together with a massive swimming pool. The Thai restaurant is superb and set on a platform in the rainforest canopy. There are villas set throuhout the rainforest on the rainforest on the way down to the private beach - in the low season they usually offer free upgrades to a villa for 7 nts or more. There is also a private island just off the beach where they will arrange a picnic for you.
Tanjung Rhu is another 5* which is quite nice but not up to the standard of the Datai (but there is a big price differential. Also, the Four Seasons has recently opened in Langkawi

one of the most romantic hotels in the world. it overlooks the canopy of trees. in the morning, as mist lifts from the forest floor, you can hear monkeys calling as u hv breakfast. It appears like it is very far from the beach but the beach is just a hundred steps away. How the architect managed to do that I dont know. Datai beach is private but not the whitest. Its architecture blends into the surroundings and is timeless. It also has a wonderful spa by the river in the forest.

Four seasons is newer and has a better beach but you can find many hotels like that around the whole and in Phuket or Bali.Tanjung Rhu is not in the same class as Datai or Four Seasons.

I'd choose either Datai or FS but for a unique experience Datai is one in a million.

You cannot fault the Datai. Stayed for a week last June and it was fantastic. Stayed in a villa. Saw some fantastic wildlife - monitor lizards, monkeys. The wild life walks are great. Food fantastic - the Thai restaurant is superb. So is the beach place. Our every need was catered for.

Can you compare the quality of snorkel outings (varieity of fish, coral, clams, etc.) to reefs maybe 30-40 minutes from the shore to Prehension or Redand Islands?

Go to www.asiahotels.com and read the reviews. It gets very mixed reviews when it comes to the food and its price/selection.
