I've stayed at the JW in Phuket 4 times now.Never been to Kho Lak.
Difference please? How far Way r they from each other?I really like to take that boat tour to James Bond Island it's fun.The marina is close to The JW in Phuket

Khao Lak is more remote. You would want to rent a car as it is over an hour's drive north from the Phuket airport. I have stayed at Khao and Lak and also at the Phuket Beach Club (condo) attached to the JW. I prefer Phuket now that I've done both of them.

...that should say Khao Lak not Khao AND Lak......

I wouldn't go to James Bond Island. I thought it was an awful excursion when I took it almost 20 years ago, and I doubt that it has improved.

The one thing I do like about the J W at Khao Lak is the rooms that have direct pool access. That was what I had. My first floor terrace was located directly on the canal. I could step directly into the canal and make my way to the pool, should I so desire. That was a really nice feature. J W Phuket doesn't have that same kind of canal as far as I know. As I mentioned, we stayed in a time share condo that was more or less attached to the J W. We used J W pool(s) and restaurants all the time. LOVED it!!! Going back for a week this December, over the New Year! Whoop whoop!

Khao Lak is 1 hr and 15 min drive north. Good roads, well marked. If you have a car there are some good places to eat off property in the communities near by. We like it as it is quieter, you can swim in the ocean. I think there are boat trips out to the area of James Bond that can be arranged thru the hotel, but we have not done that. There are 3.1 KM of lagoon pool to swim , so that keeps us busy.

Not sure how much a private boat would be.

If you go to the JW khao Lak web site they usually have a list of "attractions near by". Look at that or mail the hotel for suggestions

The only excursions in the Phuket area that I can recommend are the David Gray Tours - Sea Canoes, Hongs by Starlight, etc.

I just hope to God folks I don't run into some creep with a beaten down baby Elephant on the beach.

I have very good luck with Pure Car rentals in Phuket.. I've rented from them a number of times and will be doing so again next month.
