Quiet Thailand beach resort in Phuket or elsewhere for Dec 2012?

I haven't done enough research on this yet so forgive me for the stupid question. I'm joining friends on a trip to Thailand in December 2012. We'll be in BKK a few days then go north to an elephant sanctuary through Christmas and then will end the trip with a few days on a beach.

Since I'm tagging along I hesitate to do too much suggesting but if my input is asked for I'd like to be prepared. They're envisioning Phuket for the end of the trip but I'm not sure that's our best bet. It might just be that they've heard of it. I know that's going to be a very expensive time to be there and also probably that it'll be very crowded/loud/etc. I'm thinking what they'd really like is a beautiful beach, an upscale resort where the husband can dive (nearby). We're mid-40s and their 12 yr old son will also be along so we're not really looking for a lot of nightlife. Is Phuket too much of a party town especially around the holidays? Is there another option that I could recommend? They prefer Marriotts if that's a possibility.

Thanks for any advice.

Phuket is a very large island. Some areas are party, party, party, others are more quiet. There is a lovely JW Marriott away from the party areas, quieter, etc that might suit you.

Oh, there is also a Marriott at Khao Lak (about an hout from the Phuket airport) that may be worth considering. It would be even quieter.

Thank you! I will be sure to suggest that - it sounds perfect.

I was just thinking of you guys in BKK while watching CNN reports of flooding today.

I suggest you try to go to Kota Kinabalu. It's a really great place there. I'm sure you'll love it there.

Kota Kinabalu is quite a long way (and requires connecting flights). Also, not the best time of the year for Sabah.
