Jewelry in Bangkok

I used to live in Bangkok in the late 60's and jewelry (saphires, gold, silver) were great buys. Is that still true? What shops are recommended?

Yes, gold, sapphires and rubies are especially good buys. This question gets asked at least every other week, and many have recommended jewelry shops. I use SJ International and have always been able to get good jewelry of about one half the wholesale price in the US (one fourth of retail). I don't have the SJ card with me, but if you search this board you will find messages where I have recommended it.

If you want silver - go to Pimkin- its a small shop behind the oriental Hotel on that main drag (I forget the street name). As I recall its a block or two down from the hotel. Walk from the back of the hotel, thrn turn left on the main drag and on the right hand side you should find it. Everything is sold in plastic bins and its sold by weight.
No fancy displays, no salespeople that hang on you- its a very good place for silver.

Correction when you turn left on to the main drag it will be on your LEFT hand side of the street.

Thanks, I will check out those shops. What about silk? Is that also much cheaper in Thailand? I see recommendations for Jim Thompson's (he actually disapppeared the year I was living there). I was wondiering if that was really the best place to go. In some ways it seems like a tourist trap.

(so glad you found an old post of mine with the details on SJ)

Silk is also a good deal in Bangkok. Jim Thompson has some of the highest quality silks available. It is true that their prices are higher than elsewhere in Bangkok, but try their two outlet stores for better prices. Even their regular prices are much lower than in the US or Europe. In addition to their yard goods, their silk accessories (purses, wallets, jewelry boxes, etc) and beautifully made. Shinewatra has high quality silks as well, but what sets Jim Thompson apart are the gorgeous designs.

kathie, You're too good. You really seem to have a great handle on Bangkok. I'm so excited to finally be going back after 37 years. I'm taking my 3 kids, husband, and 88 year old mother, so this should be a great time.
