Japan Cherry Blossom season = zoo?

On another thread someone stated that the weeks of the cherry blossoms in Japan can be like a zoo, with tourists (Japanese &/or foreign) everywhere. Anyone with first-hand experience? We're planning to go for a couple weeks in Spring but were hoping to be there during these weeks (assuming we can time it right). If places become super-crowded, we may want to go in late April instead.

Because the timing can be tricky, there aren't hordes of foreigners coming to Japan to see the blossoms.

What does happen, is that the individual parks everywhere get packed, as well as the smaller resort towns where Japanese will travel for the weekend.

The crowds are what make it so much fun...get a blanket, a picnic, and some sake. Practice up on your camp songs. Squeeze in somewhere under a cherry tree. Enjoy!!

Icuy-that's almost exactly what I was going to tell Alan! I was in Kyoto during cherry blossom time, and you have to understand that the Japanese truly go crazy for the cherry blossoms-fake ones, real ones-it's something that's in their soul. I'll never forget when I went to Kyoto's largest park, at night, EVERYONE had brought a blanket and food and parked themselves early under the largest cherry blossom trees and stayed there, eating, drinking, having a good time ALL NIGHT LONG. That's what they do during this time--go to the parks and enjoy the blossoms, (the parks also have lovely Shinto shrines-everyone is making offerings as well!)

It is definitely something to experience if you can, the only problem is accomodation during this time gets well nigh impossible to find.

I don't know where you are coming from. If you are from the USA, Japan looks super-crowded just about any time. It would be a pity to miss the cherry blossom time just because of this reason.
I have been to Kyoto right in the middle of the cherry blossoms seasons. It was so pretty! Coming from the USA, even though there were lots of people, the crowd seems to be mostly transparent, you don't bump into people. Of course, there are exceptions: traffic jams and commuter trains during the rush hour are two that come to mind.

Thanks for all the reassurances. We'll go back to our plan for the very end of March & early April.
