Is the Mt Misen ropeway operating?
The Misen-yama ropeway was not operating last May and I think that emd reported that it wasn't operating at the end of March.
What is the status of the ropeway? I might go to Miyajima again this May (23rd - 24th).

When I was there the little sign as we got off the ferry said it was "closed due to weather" (recall it was sleeting and snowing). There is a site that I have posted on here before to check status of the reopening of everything after the typhoons, and I think it said the ropeway was opened after that (only the shrine was still under repair, but also open). SO my sense was it is open, but just not on the day I was there.

I think I was there a little before emd, 9-10 March. The whether was fine but the ropeway was closed for the annual check-up or something. I have sent an e-mail to Miyajima tourist office ([email protected]). As soon as they answer me, I will let you know.

Mr Saito from Miyajima Tourist Office has replied as follows.
-Last March, the ropeway was closed due to a repair work. (that was until mid March, I think as it was not running due to the wheather when emd was there.)
- It has been closed last few days due to another (unexpeced) repair work.
-It should be operating in May as long as wheather permits.
- They close usually in December for annual check-up.
Sounds like you should be able to take it to Misen san.

And the ropeway's web site says they have been open since 08 April.
Did you already see the panoramic view from the top of Misen to Shikoku side?

We rode on the ropeway 3/25 of this year. It was delayed for about an hour because of weather (it had snowed during the night), but it was awesome! Because of our delay they gave us these packaged souvenirs.... they were little wood paddles. We saw some of the same shaped items in the shops in town and were wondering what the significance of them, or that shape is? The writing on ours was all in Japanese.
