No where is as safe as it used to be.
I doubt anyone here can categorically say anywhere is safe, including Bali - although, thankfully, there are a very few places in the world one can say are "NOT SAFE".
The British Foriegn Office website usually has reasonabley sound objective advice (www.fco.gov.uk - and look for Travel Advice by Country) if you were thinking of making a trip - Bali is not on the no go list

I agree that nowhere is safe but in some places you are far more likely to find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time and Bali is one such place, likewise the Deep South of Thailand.
On the Australian Government "smarttraveller" site Bali is listed as "very high threat of terrorist attack"

TexasSlim, that was re-iterated by Australian Prime Minister on national TV just tonight - travel warnings to Bali for Australian tourists have again been reviewed and upgraded. Being so close geographically, Bali is a huge destination for Australian tourists, which is why so many died in 2003 bombings at Kuta.

All of this fear just makes no sense to me. We have no idea where terrorists are going to hit next. No one was thinking London when they hit London. All I can say is the terrorists are winning because they are instilling terror in even seasoned travelers. I, for one, won't let them do that for me.
I mean everythone is hysterical about bird flu and terrorists but a lot more people died this summer alone of west nile virus in the U.S. and I don't think anyone was warning people not to come to the U.S. It's just not logical.
