The Balinease are Hindu, not Muslim. The risk is quite a bit lower than it would be on other Indoneasian islands that are muslim. Tourism is their main industry and the Indoneasian government understands this.

We were in Bali at the time East Timor was unraveling. We never had a problem in Bali.

BTW, I found that the Australian State Department had much better information about safety Bali than the U.S. State Department site. I guess it has to do with their geographical proximtity.

I am an American and I just returned from a week in Bali, with my husband and 2 children. It was the most delightful vacation we have ever had. The Balinese are gracious and hospitable and as mentioned in another post, they are Hindu, not Muslim. Since tourism is down right now in Indonesia, it's a great time to go. Not crowded and the US dollar buys 10,000 rupiah at the moment, which makes most everything a huge bargain.

The Bali administration, authorities and people have given assurance that the Island of the Gods remains just as safe and enjoyable as ever, with daily life going on as normal. Separated from Java and other islands by sea, Bali is a deeply spiritual island and very different from the rest of Indonesia. The peace and harmony of the island remains a steadfast foundation of Balinese life, even when other areas are experiencing turmoil.

For more details check: http://www.indo.com
