Marmot that's great. I will concentrate on Jakarta, Amanjiwo and Bali...Ubud and Legian in Seminyak. NO yogis, crystals or surfers if possible!!!
Do you recommend anyplace in Ubud with long pool for laps...budget is generous...would love to be able to walk to warungs, etc but if have to take taxi or Moto, that's fine, too.

The town of Ubud is good for shopping and dining, but I'd rather sleep in the surrounding countryside. Big pools with valley views are fairly common. By big, I'd say 25 meters minimum. The resorts could give you the measurements. All will arrange a wide range of activities -- cooking classes, warung tours, bike rides, bird walks, ceremonies, dances, arts and crafts etc.I'm a longtime fan of the Alila (a local group that is now owned by Hyatt, I think). The Alila Ubud is on the Sayan Ridge about 30 minutes drive from Ubud central. The pool is long and lovely and the suites, which are actually one room wooden villas, have large balconies with spectacular river valley views. There are several other luxe resorts along the Sayan Ridge: Amandari, Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton. The Como Shambhala is an extraordinarily beautiful place. Its focus is on spa and wellness which may or may not appeal.Further out, there are a lot of newish properties in the area around Keliki village. New to me too, so I can't recommend. Within walking distance of Ubud town, the Uma Ubud is also very nice.I'd suggest a few nights in the Ubud area then a few nights farther afield. I like the Munduk area (e.g. the Munduk Moding resort) and also Sidemen. Now that I live in Bali I don't frequent resorts too much, but you should be able to find recommendations for these areas on line. I find that the resorts' websites and Instagram postings are more current than the guidebooks.
Correction to my previous post: Canggu is north of Seminyak, not south.

Via HK?? Just interested in wandering and eating.....

Sorry to hear about your loss.
Most countries in Asia have non-stop or one-stop flights from New York plus onward connections to Jakarta. Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Bangkok are all easily accessible, urban destinations, buzzing with energy. It really depends on what interests you.
I would consider SQ the overall best for service and convenience; Emirates through Dubai for best value. If you decide not to spend time in Singapore you could still take the non-stop Newark to Singapore and connect from there to Jakarta and/or any other place, especially throughout Southeast Asia.

Marmot and others who kindly contributed to my thread here: I wanted to return and say that I do not think we will be taking this trip this year. My relative's posting in Jakarta ends about the time we would have visited and I think that the family will be too busy with relocating (back to DC) to spend much time with us. So it seems as if we will have to wait for the next Asia posting and be sure to make my plans for a visit further in advance that I did this time.
Thank you again for all of your generous help..one of these days we will get back to Indonesia but, sadly, it looks as if will not be this year.
