I'm in my 60s and travel with my husband so don't have quite as many apprehensions (obviously since we are planning another trip to India). And, on our trip to India we were primarily in places where we stayed put at night. But, I did have one experience where I did feel uncomfortable. We were in a very small village staying at the heritage home, and there was a celebration going on to which we'd been invited. My husband was with the men drinking in the men's area, and I was in the women's area. I was tired and decided to return alone to our room which was about a half a block or a block away in this same compound. There was a group of male teens who definitely were obnoxious and made me very, very uncomfortable with their actions. I was glad when I reached the gate to the house. I'll admit I don't like being a female out walking alone at night anywhere I am not familiar with, so I don't think this is just an India thing.

The Danish woman who was just attacked was 51. The Swiss woman who was attacked last year was with her husband. The New Delhi woman who died was with her boyfriend. If it's gang rape the two of you will be outnumbered.
